Operation NANOOK

The largest sovereignty operations conducted annually in Canada’s North, Operation NANOOK takes place in several locations across Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.


Operation NANOOK 2012 took place in Inuvik and Tsiigehtchic, Northwest Territories. I had the privilege to photograph members of the Canadian Forces, Canadian Rangers and the local people.

Canadian Rangers

The Canadian Rangers are a sub-component of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve. They provide patrols and detachments for national-security and public-safety missions in sparsely settled northern, coastal and isolated areas of Canada.

 

Heavy Lift

Operation NANOOK is Canada's premiere annual Northern sovereignty operation. The NANOOK series enable the Canadian Forces to demonstrate its ability to operate effectively in the challenging Arctic environment, enhancing the skills of soldiers, sailors, and airmen and airwomen.

Dempster Highway

The Dempster Highway is Canada's road to the top of the world, north of the Arctic Circle. It passes through some of the most beautiful and remote wilderness scenery in North America. Starting outside Dawson City, Yukon, and stretching 730 km to Inuvik, NT the Dempster is an all weather gravel road with two ferry crossings.

High Readiness

8 ACCS is a high readiness, self-sustainable unit capable of deploying worldwide by air, land or sea. Its primary mission is to support Canadian air operations through the provision of a network enabled, controlled airfield, regardless of environmental conditions.

Eagle Eye

The RCMP’s UAV is a four-bladed helicopter about the size of a large pizza with a mount for a camera that feeds back to a display on the ground so its operator can see what the camera sees.
